For 54 years Lawrence and Naomi Patton of Sunnyslope have relied on one another. They owned a lawn service company and raised two children. About five years ago, they realized that Social Security checks weren&#8217;t going to provide for all they needed. They turned to the Desert Mission Food Bank to put food in the cupboard and a kind man at their church to help prepare their meals.&#8221;We take what we can get, whatever they can give us,&#8221; said Lawrence Patton, 78. &#8220;Every time we come into that establishment there, they ask if there&#8217;s anything we can do for us. You don&#8217;t meet friends just every day. They&#8217;ve just been real friends.&#8221;The Pattons and other seniors in the community will benefit from a $32,000 grant awarded to Desert Mission Food Bank. Desert Mission, a program of the John C. Lincoln Health Network, is one of eight entities that have been awarded grants from the Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of health-benefits company Humana Inc. Cindy Hallman, executive director of Desert Mission, said the grant will provide $20,000 to buy food for seniors in need. The remaining $12,000 is earmarked for the Desert Mission Community Health Center.&#8221;We&#8217;re seeing more and more seniors needing help with emergency food,&#8221; Hallman said. &#8220;The food bank is providing a day&#8217;s worth of food to a hungry person equivalent to every 2 1/2 minutes around the clock.&#8221;Earlier this week, Ed Mead was one of several seniors shopping at the 4th Street Market, a part of Desert Mission Food Bank. Eligible individuals can choose their own groceries from a wide selection of items, such as fresh produce, meat and staples like toilet paper and dishwasher detergent. He has been coming to Desert Mission Food Bank for six months.&#8221;Social Security doesn&#8217;t carry it all the way,&#8221; Mead said of his living expenses. &#8220;I live in a group home setting with another woman. We help each other out.&#8221; <br/><br/></p>

		<title>Broccoli Is Not A Health Food At My House</title>

Broccoli is said to be one of those super foods that are very healthy and good food you. It is a good source of fiber, vitamin C, iron, and potassium which are four very good reasons to eat it often. And we do like broccoli at my house. Some of our favorite foods contain broccoli: broccoli covered with cheese sauce, cream of broccoli soup, broccoli and cheese dip, broccoli cheese soup, and deep fried broccoli cheddar bites. Yes, at my house we only like broccoli if it&#8217;s swimming in cheese or cream, or has been battered and deep fried. Even when I steam broccoli in an effort to eat it more healthfully my entire family puts butter on it to make it taste better.<br />
While I think it&#8217;s good that we are eating broccoli, I think the high fat foods we are eating with are so bad for us that we are better off skipping the broccoli and batter, cream, and cheese sauce that goes with it.<br />
I have even tried cutting raw broccoli in small pieces and hiding it in a tossed salad. Those small pieces of broccoli stuck out like neon signs and my family picked out every last piece before eating their salad. I at least tried one bite before picking the broccoli out my salad.<br />
What can a person do when they know there are food that are really healthy and good for them, but cannot seem to find a way to enjoy them in healthy way or at least a semi-healthy way?<br />
After years of struggling to find a way to way to consume broccoli in a way that&#8217;s at least semi healthy I found two ways that my family loves it and that no longer leaves it swimming in a complete sea of fat.<br />
The first way; we have it in a stir fry! The strong yet delicious flavor of stir fry sauce cut the strong taste of broccoli and makes it rather tasty. I&#8217;ve found that beef or chicken with broccoli is pretty good; but my favorite is chicken with broccoli, sugar snap peas, and water chestnuts.<br />
The second way is a broccoli and cauliflower salad that does contain some salad dressing but it&#8217;s not an overwhelming amount. To make it you&#8217;ll need: 1 large bunch broccoli with the florets cut into bite sized pieces; one large head of cauliflower with the florets cut into bite sized pieces; 1/3 cup chopped red onion; 1 cup Miracle Whip light; 1/3 cup sugar or sugar substitute; 2 tablespoons vinegar; 2 hard boiled eggs. Optional: 4 strips bacon cooked and crumbled and 1/3 cup shredded low fat cheddar cheese.<br />
In a large bowl combine the broccoli, cauliflower and onion (add bacon and cheese at this time if using). Set aside. In a separate small bowl, mix together the Miracle Whip light, sugar or sugar substitute, and vinegar. Pour over vegetable mixture and chill. Slice the hard boiled eggs and garnish the salad with them before serving.<br />
Even though I listed the cheese as optional I do admit that I usually put it in the salad. I haven&#8217;t totally avoided having cheese with my broccoli but it&#8217;s a much healthier cheese than the processed cheese sauce I used to have my broccoli go swimming in.<br />
If you aren&#8217;t a fan of broccoli yet but want to try and eat more of it because it is so healthy and good for you, try it in the salad recipe above or in a stir fry. While it may not become one of your favorite foods, it may become a food you enjoy having. <br/><br/></p>

Rub with salt, flour, pepper and onion. Place meat in roasting pan with fat side up. Add 1-cup water. Do not cover unless a less tender cut is used. If beef is fat, it will require no basting. Time required for roasting depends on shape of cut. For well done roasts, the average cooking time is 30 minutes per pound of meat, for medium 25 minutes per pound, and 20 for rare. ROAST AT 325 <br/><br/>GRANDMA’S BAKED HAM AND APPLES2 large slices of ham steak.2 teaspoons……………..(10 ml)………………….prepared mustard.4 tablespoons………….(60 ml)……………………brown sugar.2 tart apples.1 ½ cups…………………………(375 ml)…………………apple juice.Place the ham in baking dish and rub with mustard.  Sprinklewith 2 tablespoons (30 ml), of brown sugar.  Core the appleand cut into thin slices.  Cover the ham with the apple slicesand sprinkle with rest of brown sugar.  Add apple juice. Bakeat 300 F, (150 C), for 30 minutes or until tender.YIELD:  4-5 servings.TIME:   40 minutes. <br/><br/>Pizza Potatoes1/2 cup broccoli, chopped1/4 onion, chopped1/4 cup carrots, chopped fine1 small tomato, sliced2 baked potatoes1/2 tablespoon margarine1/2 tablespoon flour1/2 cup skim milk1/4 cup cheese, shreddedCook broccoli, onions, and carrots in a small amount of water until tender and set aside. Top with sliced tomatoes.Serves 2. <br/><br/>Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies <br/><br/>Ingredients: <br/><br/>2 cups unbleached white flour <br/><br/>2 teaspoons baking powder <br/><br/>1/2 teaspoon salt <br/><br/>cinnamon to taste (optional) <br/><br/>1 cup vegan chocolate chips <br/><br/>1 cup organic sugar <br/><br/>1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil <br/><br/>1 teaspoon vanilla <br/><br/>1/4 cup water <br/><br/>Directions: <br/><br/>Preheat oven to 350. <br/><br/>In a large bowl mix flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Mix in the chocolate chips. Make a well in the center and set bowl aside. <br/><br/>In a medium size bowl mix vegan sugar and oil. Add the vanilla and then add the water. Be sure to mix it well.  Add the wet to the well in the dry. Even when I steam broccoli in an effort to eat it more healthfully my entire family puts butter on it to make it taste better.   <br/><br/>While I think it&#8217;s good that we are eating broccoli, I think the high fat foods we are eating with are so bad for us that we are better off skipping the broccoli and batter, cream, and cheese sauce that goes with it.   <br/><br/>I have even tried cutting raw broccoli in small pieces and hiding it in a tossed salad.  Those small pieces of broccoli stuck out like neon signs and my family picked out every last piece before eating their salad.  I at least tried one bite before picking the broccoli out my salad.   <br/><br/>What can a person do when they know there are food that are really healthy and good for them, but cannot seem to find a way to enjoy them in healthy way or at least a semi-healthy way? <br/><br/>After years of struggling to find a way to way to consume broccoli in a way that&#8217;s at least semi healthy I found two ways that my family loves it and that no longer leaves it swimming in a complete sea of fat.   <br/><br/>The first way; we have it in a stir fry!  The strong yet delicious flavor of stir fry sauce cut the strong taste of broccoli and makes it rather tasty.  I&#8217;ve found that beef or chicken with broccoli is pretty good; but my favorite is chicken with broccoli, sugar snap peas, and water chestnuts.   <br/><br/>The second way is a broccoli and cauliflower salad that does contain some salad dressing but it&#8217;s not an overwhelming amount.  To make it you&#8217;ll need: 1 large bunch broccoli with the florets cut into bite sized pieces; one large head of cauliflower with the florets cut into bite sized pieces; 1/3 cup chopped red onion; 1 cup Miracle Whip light; 1/3 cup sugar or sugar substitute; 2 tablespoons vinegar; 2 hard boiled eggs.  Optional: 4 strips bacon cooked and crumbled and 1/3 cup shredded low fat cheddar cheese.  <br/><br/>In a large bowl combine the broccoli, cauliflower and onion (add bacon and cheese at this time if using).  Set aside.  In a separate small bowl, mix together the Miracle Whip light, sugar or sugar substitute, and vinegar.  Pour over vegetable mixture and chill. Slice the hard boiled eggs and garnish the salad with them before serving.   <br/><br/>Even though I listed the cheese as optional I do admit that I usually put it in the salad.  I haven&#8217;t totally avoided having cheese with my broccoli but it&#8217;s a much healthier cheese than the processed cheese sauce I used to have my broccoli go swimming in.   <br/><br/>If you aren&#8217;t a fan of broccoli yet but want to try and eat more of it because it is so healthy and good for you, try it in the salad recipe above or in a stir fry.  While it may not become one of your favorite foods, it may become a food you enjoy having. <br/><br/></p>

Rub with salt, flour, pepper and onion. Place meat in roasting pan with fat side up. Add 1-cup water. Do not cover unless a less tender cut is used. If beef is fat, it will require no basting. Time required for roasting depends on shape of cut. For well done roasts, the average cooking time is 30 minutes per pound of meat, for medium 25 minutes per pound, and 20 for rare. I personally do not advocate for commercially prepared dried pet food diet.  From the pet food recall incident, we know that dogs today get sick from cancer, diabetes, liver and kidney diseases at a young age and most died suffering from the onset of the illness.  The pet food recall exercise have just confirmed my thoughts about pet diet does contribute and play a major role in their health condition today.</p>
<p>Thus, we cannot ignore the fact that commercially prepared food is a cause of these recent pet health issues.  Cook for your pet today instead if you can. <p>•	Select only brands that has meat sources listed as first two ingredients in the list.  Look out for words like human-grade food source or organic.  Avoid brands that list grains as their main source of protein, meat meals and by-products, dyes, artificial preservatives like BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin and propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is known to cause bloat and anemia in dogs.  </p>
<p>•	Do your research on dog food brands that you are feeding. Talk to dog owners who purchase the same brand as you and observe if their dogs are healthy and coat is looking good.  </p>
<p>•	Choose premium brands from specialty store and perform some basic research on the source of meats and food source of the brand you choose. </p>
<p>•	Consider cooking and making a little extra fresh foods for your dog’s daily meal and let this little extra be about 30% of your dog’s diet. Very simply, just include in your dog’s kibble diet cooked meats with some pulp vegetables and eggs instead of just dried food or canned foods.  This will not throw the diet out of balance and your dog will have a more palatable and healthier meals.</p>
<p>•	Add enzymes to their meals. Cooked food or kibble diet do not contain enzymes which is responsible for breaking down the food properly.  You can consider feeding aloe vera juice with the kibbles.  Aloe vera juice is a natural plant full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes.  Take note to purchase pure aloe vera juice from health food store, not those aloe vera drinks found in supermarkets.</p>
<p>•	Enzymes are also found in fresh fruits daily (just a little portion a day (AVOID all citrus fruits, avocados, grapes and raisins), if you feed your dog one meal a day, feed them fruits for their second meal)</p>
<p>•	Canned Dog Food vs Home Cooked Meats</p>
<p>•	Personally, most canned dog food usually contain some preservatives and/or salt.  Though some preservatives are natural, but we have to ask ourselves. If eating canned food daily is not a good for us humans, logically, it is unhealthy for your dog as well.  Canned food is a very convenient option and can be used occasionally when you are in a rush or your dog is in boarding.  But on a regular basis, avoid giving your dog canned food everyday.  </p>
<p>•	If you would like to make your dog’s meals more palatable, cook a pot of minced/chopped meats with olive oil, add some minced vegetables and eggs.  Freeze a week’s worth of cooked food in portions of 3 days worth.  Defreeze as and when you need so you can mix with dry dog food.   It will save you a lot of preparation time if you do in bulk but most importantly, you have prepared a much more healthier and wholesome meats for your dog.  It is also a cheaper option compared to canned food.</p>

Although it took some time for organic foods per se to truly catch the attention of the general populace, the organic food market these days is a thriving industry and one that can only become bigger as the years progress and more and more people turn away from chemical enriched foods. </p>
<p>Of course not everyone cares about exactly what they eat or how it was produced, if they did we wouldn’t have had a need for a separate “organic food market”, would we? The fact remains however that some people do care, and although the number isn’t yet overwhelming, it is growing annually at healthy percentage. </p>
<p>This in turn paves the way to open up the organic food market even more. And this means that the prices of organic foods also come down, which is a heaven-sent opportunity really to garner more and more people to the side of organic foods. </p>
<p>Why? Simply because as the prices come down to something manageable, and the whole fad of being healthy, living healthy and eating healthy builds up slowly, more people will turn more willingly towards the organic food market than they might otherwise have done if the price tags on organic foods remained high.  </p>
<p>This in turn will spur more farmers to go organic than otherwise would have, if there was only a small consumer base for the organic food market. And this in turn, will help to bring more organic food to the consumer. </p>
<p>It’s definitely a cycle and not a vicious one unless of course you’re a farmer who prefers the use of chemical pesticides over natural ones, artificial fertilizers over natural fertilizers, and who doesn’t mind that they are using genetically modified plants and seed stock as their crops. </p>
<p>It is also interesting to note that the organic food market doesn’t only encompass produce in the form of fruits and vegetables, but it only encompasses such things as dairy products, meats, fish, poultry, and processed foods as well. </p>
<p>This means that the production of organic foods is down not only to produce farmers, but also to livestock farmers and plants that generate processed foods. In fact, the spread of the organic food market doesn’t stop there. It goes on to encompass health food stores as well as grocery stores interested in selling organic foods, and specialty stores that deal only in organically grown, cultivated or managed foods. </p>
<p>And to truly understand how wide open the organic food market really is, all you need to is to look into pet stores and the items they are selling. Organic foods it seems, has spilled over into this area as well, and health conscious pet owners can now find organic pet foods littering the pet stores as well! <br/><br/></p>
